Workpackage 3: Assessment of Balance Function
WP3, led by Wiebren Ziljstra, focused on measures of balance function that could be used for fall prediction and the assessment of outcome of fall intervention programmes for older people. Identifying such measures is not simply a matter of choosing one instrument or measure out of all available options. Not only are 'gold standards' lacking, the available options usually come with serious disadvantages. Hence, the overall aim of the work by WP3 was to identify balance assessment tools that are relevant and of practical use in fall intervention programmes. The WP organised a number of workshops covering how balance should be assessed and against what criteria balance measures should be evaluated as well as the future possibilities of body fixed sensor based technology. A number of systematic reviews were published and these can be found in the ProFaNE publications list.
